Spectacular 1941 Babe Ruth Signed Photo
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900
Photo of Babe Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees, flawlessly inscribed in black fountain pen: "To My Pal/Billy Ball/From/Babe Ruth/Oct 31-1941." Both the inscription and signature grade a perfect "10" and could not be any bolder! This is an extraordinary Ruth photo with regard to the signature and one of the finest examples we can recall offering. One can see that Ruth took great care so as not to overlap any portion of his leg with either the inscription or the signature, keeping each on the light-colored background for maximum contrast. The image itself is also appealing and pictures Ruth in full swing while taking batting practice on the field. In the background one can see a number of photographers, as well as a Yankee player, as they attempt to capture the moment on film. The photo (6.75 x 8.75 inches) is trimmed on all sides to its current dimensions and displays chips in both the lower right and left corners. A tiny abrasion touches upon Ruth's image. Remnants of mounting tape remain on the reverse along the top, left, and right borders. The photo is accompanied by a black mount (9 x 12 inches), which when applied, hides nearly all of the aforementioned flaws, leaving the photo with an overall Excellent appearance. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,900
