Circa 1931 Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320
Official American League ball (with red-and-blue stitching) signed in black fountain pen by Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Fred Hofmann, and one other (faded beyond legibility). Both the Foxx and Simmons signatures have been scripted on individual side panels, with Foxx grading "4" and Simmons grading "4/5." The Hofmann signature ("2") appears together with the other illegible signature on a separate side panel. Although there is no stamped signature of the respective league president, the visible markings date it to the overall 1929-1933 manufacturing period. Hofmann's Major League career ended after the 1928 season, but he continued playing professionally in the PCL for a number of years before returning to the Majors as a coach in 1938. Foxx and Simmons, of course, were two of the mainstays of Connie Mack's 1929-1931 Philadelphia A's Championship Dynasty. Ideally, this ball displays as either a Foxx or Simmons single if so desired, making it an extremely desirable dual-signed ball dating from their active playing careers. The ball displays moderate abrasions and is in Good to Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,320
