1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum Buck Ewing

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $7,200

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Outstanding E223 example of Hall of Famer Buck Ewing! This is a remarkable card in all respects, and one that (as can easily be seen) presents far better than its technical grade. This card is a gem! The small size (1 x 2.25 inches) of G & Bs and the fact that they were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. This example of Hall of Famer Buck Ewing is one of the most prominent stars from this unusual set. This is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). The card presents as Excellent from the front: bright and clean, with outstanding contrast, strong corners, and an exceptionally strong overall visual appeal. It has been downgraded entirely due to the presence of staining on the blank reverse, which appears to be tape residue from having been mounted at some point in time. No paper loss or creases. This is a very impressive sample of a very significant Hall of Famer from E223 G & B Chewing Gum, one of collecting's rarest and most highly regarded nineteenth-century card issues. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
