Circa 1940 Jimmie Foxx Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,300
Official American League (Harridge) ball signed by Jimmie Foxx in black fountain pen (grading "8") across the sweet spot. This ball displays two signature removals, one each on separate side panels (the signature removal on the panel below Foxx's signature was extremely heavy-handed, resulting in a large abrasion). The intent behind those removals was, of course, so that the ball would display as a Jimmie Foxx single-signed ball and in that regard, the objective has been fulfilled. Jimmie Foxx single-signed balls are scarce and oftentimes exceed most collecting budgets. The fact that this ball offers the same exact aesthetic appeal as any other Foxx single, but will sell for a significant discount to a true single-signed ball, makes it an appealing alternative to many collectors. This ball dates to the narrow 1940-1942 manufacturing period, which corresponds to Foxx's last three full seasons in the Majors (he played sparingly in 1944 and 1945). As such, it was almost certainly signed by "The Beast" during his active playing career, which only adds to its appeal. The ball, as noted previously, displays a large abrasion on the south panel, as well as a few smaller abrasions and light toning. In Good to Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,300
