1934 Vernon Gomez All America Baseball Team Certificate Signed by George Herman Ruth
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $19,200
There are few, if any, more impressive Ruth-signed items than a full signature (George Herman Ruth) All America Board of Baseball Award Certificate. Offered here is a most extraordinary and outstanding example presented to New York Yankees pitcher and future Hall of Famer Lefty Gomez in 1934. During the 1920s, promotional whiz Christy Walsh, who was also Babe Ruth's agent, came up with the idea of creating the All America Board of Baseball, and he appointed Babe Ruth as its chairman. The idea was for the board to formally recognize and honor the greatest players of the game at each position each year. The board took great pride in selecting an All America Baseball Team from the ranks of the Major Leagues. The selection of the All America Baseball Team was made by Ruth and a panel of ten sportswriters (one sportswriter from each Major League city), with recipients receiving an extremely impressive certificate signed by Ruth and the panel of sportswriters. Each player also received a colorful red, white, and blue sweater.
The offered certificate, printed in grand calligraphic style, is dated September 11, 1934, and has been flawlessly signed in blue fountain pen (grading "10") by "George Herman Ruth," and in black fountain pen the ten respective sportswriters on the board, and Christy Walsh. The original seal and ribbon remain intact and perfectly affixed in the lower left (these seals and ribbons are often damaged or missing). The certificate (13 x 16.5 inches) displays a small area of minor staining in the lower left corner and a few light creases(of little or no consequence, mentioned strictly for the sake of extreme accuracy). In technically Very Good to Excellent condition overall, with a spectacular Excellent or better appearance, and, it must be noted and emphasized, simply in far superior condition than is almost ever seen for these certificates (many examples we have seen display heavy staining).
Because of their extraordinary display value, the prestige of this award, and the rare full-name signature of Ruth they often feature, All America Board of Baseball certificates have always been extremely popular with collectors. The fact that this certificate was issued to Lefty Gomez, who was a teammate of Babe Ruth's, and dates from Ruth's final season with the Yankees, makes it especially noteworthy. This is an extremely attractive Ruth signed display piece that would be a highlight in many different types of collections. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 21 x 24 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $19,200
