Pair of 1930 Ty Cobb Signed Personal Checks - Ty Cobb Museum Provenance!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,800
Pair of Ty Cobb signed personal checks, each dating from 1930. Both of these checks have a very special provenance in that for the past sixteen years they have been on display at the Ty Cobb Museum, located in Royston, Georgia. When the museum opened in 1998, both checks were among the original display items. They have only just recently been returned to our consignor. Each check features Cobb's preprinted name at the top and is drawn on the Georgia Railroad Bank of Augusta, Georgia. 1) Check, dated October 22, 1930, made out to the "Georgia Field Trial Club" in the amount of $10, signed "Tyrus R. Cobb" in black fountain pen (grading "8"). Endorsed by the club secretary on the reverse. As noted on the front, this check was in payment of club dues. A small portion of the check (7.75 x 3.25 inches) has been torn away along the left border, and the check also displays light toning and three vertical folds, one of which runs through the Cobb signature. In Good condition overall. 2) Check, dated November 14, 1930, made out to the "Augusta Country Club" in the amount of $77, signed "Tyrus R. Cobb" in blue fountain pen (grading "7"). A stamped endorsement appears on the reverse. The check (8 x 3.25 inches) displays a trimmed left border upon the end of which has been affixed a thin, cut portion of the checkbook stub. Aside from that, and some light toning, the check is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. Total: 2 checks. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,800
