1929 Babe Ruth Signed Government Postcard

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,300

Government postcard, postmarked February 19, 1929, signed on the front in black fountain pen (grading "9/10") by Babe Ruth. The vintage, handwritten notation "World's Record for Home Runs" is neatly printed in black fountain pen above Ruth's signature. A small, cut newspaper photo of Ruth has been affixed to the card along the bottom right corner. Even though he was still six years from retirement, Ruth did indeed hold the world record for home runs heading into the 1929 season, with 470, but he was far from finished. Ruth led the league in home runs for the next three seasons and added another 244 to his total before retiring in 1935 with 714 home runs. This is one of a number of signed government postcards offered in this auction (presented in four separate lots), all of which were originally obtained by a family member of our consignor during the late 1920s and early 1930s. All have remained in the family's sole possession since that time and are being offered here for the very first time. The postcard (5.5 x 3.25 inches), which is toned, has a number of creases (not affecting the signature), as well as both adhesive residue and surface-paper loss on the reverse as a result of having once been mounted in an album. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $3,300
