Exceptional 1929 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Autograph Book
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $10,800
Deep within the many pages of this vintage 1920s autograph album, rife with mundane platitudes, can found a true hidden gem for baseball autograph collectors: a sheet signed by five members of the 1929 New York Yankees, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig! The Ruth and Gehrig signatures are the first two in the list, directly below which are the signatures of George Pipgras, Mark Koenig, and Fred Heimach. All of the signatures have been boldly rendered in blue fountain pen and grade "9/10." Ideally, the date the book was signed is noted to the right of the signatures: "May 23, 1929." As indicated on the first page, this album belonged to a young woman attending Lowell Seminary, which was an elite finishing school for women, located in Newton, Massachusetts. All of the entries in the book are from personal friends of the original recipient with the exception of the Yankees page. The Yankees traveled to Fenway Park on May 23, 1929, for the start of a five-game series with the Red Sox. Obviously, the owner of this book was at the game and managed to coax a few of the Yankee players to sign her book. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox 7-6 that day, with Ruth contributing a solo home run. Pipgras started the game for the Yankees, but Heimach earned the win in relief. The green, leather-covered album (6.5 x 5.5 inches) displays moderate wear to the exterior, with all of the interior pages clean and bright. In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $10,800
