1928 Ty Cobb Signed Government Postcard
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960
Government postcard, postmarked March 7, 1928, signed on the front in black fountain pen (grading "8/9") by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. The vintage, handwritten notation "Famous Baseball Player Who Has More Than Four Thousand Hits" is neatly printed in black fountain pen above Cobb's signature. A small, cut newspaper photo of Cobb has been affixed to the card along the right border. Cobb was about to start his final major league season in the spring of 1928. Even though he was forty-one years old, the fabled "Georgia Peach" still managed to bat .323 in ninety-five games with the Athletics that year. This is one of a number of signed government postcards offered in this auction (presented in four separate lots), all of which were originally obtained by a family member of our consignor during the late 1920s and early 1930s. All have remained in the family's sole possession since that time and are being offered here for the very first time. The postcard (5.5 x 3.25 inches), which is toned, has a number of moderate-to-heavy creases, as well as both adhesive residue and surface-paper loss on the reverse as a result of having once been mounted in an album. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $960
