1924 Christy Mathewson Signed Check with Letter from Mrs. Christy Mathewson!
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $19,200
Offered here is one of the most remarkable Christy Mathewson checks in existence, both with regard to the quality of the signature and its extraordinary provenance. The bank check, dated October 13, 1924, and drawn on the Adirondack National Bank of Saranac Lake, New York, is made out to the "Northern New York Telephone Corp" in the amount of $3.58. It has been beautifully signed in black fountain pen by "Christy Mathewson," with the signature grading "9/10." Mathewson's name is preprinted along the left border. A stamped endorsement appears on the reverse.
This check originates directly from Mrs. Christy Mathewson, who sent it to our consignor's husband in 1956. Ideally, it is accompanied by both Mrs. Mathewson's letter to him and its original mailing envelope (7 x 4 inches), which is postmarked "Aug 29 1956." It appears that our consignor's husband was also on the hunt for a McGraw signature example at the time, given Mrs. Mathewson's response in her one-page handwritten letter (6.25 x 7 inches). In full: "I am enclosing a cancelled [sic] check signed by my husband. Mrs. McGraws [sic] address is 30 Fifth Avenue Apt 3G New York 11 NY. I see her in Florida each winter. Sincerely, Mrs. Christy Mathewson." Both Mrs. Mathewson's signature and the handwritten text have been scripted in blue ink and grade "10."
Canceled checks have always been highly prized among autograph collectors due to the inherent authenticity they provide for the signatures. The fact that this example comes with the added provenance of originating directly from Mrs. Christy Mathewson, with her personal note, further distinguishes it as one of the best and most interesting Mathewson checks in existence! As most collectors know, Mathewson's signature is very rare because of his untimely death at the age of forty-five in 1925 and is by far the rarest of the first five Hall of Fame inductees to find on a check. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation holes, as well as a heavy vertical fold in the center (just ever so slightly touching upon the "C" in "Christy"). Aside from the fold, the check remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Mrs. Mathewson's letter displays a horizontal fold and is in Excellent to Mint condition. The mailing envelope is in Excellent condition. Total: 3 items (check, letter, and mailing envelope). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++. SOLD FOR $19,200
