1911 T201 Mecca Double Folder Zack Wheat Signed Card
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960
Extremely rare Zack Wheat autographed T201 Mecca Double Folder (William Bergen/Zack Wheat). Wheat has boldly signed the card in blue fountain pen directly above his image, with the signature grading "9/10." This is only the second Zack Wheat signed T201 card we have ever seen, which is not surprising given the scarcity of autographed tobacco cards in general. Although tobacco cards have always been plentiful, few collectors had either the inclination or opportunity to get cards signed. Autograph collectors had many other options to get different types of items signed and rarely had cards at all, and card collectors were usually only interested in cards, and rarely sought autographs. If the opportunity to get an autograph arose, few fans happened to have a tobacco card of the given player handy. To get a tobacco card signed took planning or was accomplished with great effort by mail. The interest in autographed cards is relatively recent, and with the passing long ago of players from the 1910 era, every tobacco card that is signed is unusual and noteworthy. A few long-lived players were known to have been presented with different tobacco cards to sign, such as Rube Marquard, but they are the exception. Wheat was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1959 and died in 1972, so obviously a few collectors had the opportunity to obtain his signature on a tobacco card, but examples remain exceedingly rare. The card has been trimmed on all four sides, but Wheat's full image remains intact. Encapsulated and certified "Authentic" by GAI. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
