1923 Chicago White Sox Team-Signed Ball with Babe Ruth and Miller Huggins
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,560
This 1923 Chicago White Sox team-signed ball is notable because it also features the signatures of three New York Yankees: manager Miller Huggins, Babe Ruth, and Joe Bush. The official American League (Johnson) ball (dating from the 1918-1924 manufacturing period) features twenty-two black-ink signatures, including Babe Ruth (sweet spot; grading "2"), Miller Huggins (grading "2"), Joe Bush, Ray Schalk, Ed Walsh (coach), Harry Hooper, Eddie Collins, Red Faber, Kid Gleason (Mgr.), Frank Mack (sweet spot), Earl Sheely, Roy Graham, Mark Ovengros, Ernie Johnson, Bibb Falk, Willie Kamm, Paul Castner, Charlie Robertson, Ted Blankenship, and Johnny Mostil. Signatures range from "1" to "7," averaging "3/4." Given the fact that the signatures of three New York Yankees players appear on the ball, one can only assume that it was obtained at a game between the White Sox and Yankees. The signature of Miller Huggins is exceedingly rare in any form because he died in 1929 at the age of fifty-one. Team balls from the early 1920s in general are scarce, and this one, featuring the signatures of seven Hall of Famers, including Ruth and Huggins, is especially desirable. The ball displays light toning and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,560
