1947 Babe Ruth Signed Letter - PSA/DNA MINT 9
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800
One-page typed letter, dated April 7, 1947, signed in black fountain pen by Babe Ruth. Accompanied by a full LOA from PSA/DNA, which has graded the signature MINT 9. In his letter, written on his personal stationery, Ruth responds to a Mrs. Hazel Colson and offers thanks for her recent letter. In full: "My dear Mrs. Colson, My sincere thanks to you and your family for your very kind letter and good wishes. Having friends does mean so very much to me, and during my recent illness, I had more ample proof. I hope you will accept this photograph in appreciation. Sincerely, Babe Ruth [signed]." Ruth was in very poor health at the time of this letter. Just twenty days later, on August 27, he traveled to Yankee Stadium, where he was honored on "Babe Ruth Day." Over 58,000 fans packed Yankee Stadium that day to pay homage to the legendary "Bambino." Ruth, dressed in long overcoat and cap, his voice hoarse from throat cancer, addressed the crowd one last time, saying "Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. You know how bad my voice sounds. Well, it feels just as bad. . . . There's been so many lovely things said about me, I'm glad I had the opportunity to thank everybody. Thank you." Interestingly, many of the Ruth letters we have seen date from approximately this time in 1947, when many fans were writing him and wishing that he get better. Obviously, he still had the strength to respond to most of them, and, as the offered letter indicates, it was customary for Ruth to include a small signed photo as a token of his appreciation. The letter (7 x 10 inches) displays three horizontal folds, a paperclip impression along the top, and a small area of light adhesive residue along the top of the reverse from having once been mounted in a photo album. In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $4,800
