1929 Philadelphia Athletics Team Panorama
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320
This large panoramic photograph captures twenty-seven members of the 1929 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics posing together at Shibe Park. Each of the players is identified in white lettering below his respective image, including manager Connie Mack, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, Howard Ehmke, Kid Gleason, Eddie Rommel, George Earnshaw, Rube Walberg, and Bing Miller. This photo was most likely produced just prior to the World Series, as the printed caption in the upper right corner reads "Philadelphia 'Athletics'-American League Pennant Winners-1929." The photographer's credit ("J. Bodziak-Philadelphia") appears in the lower right. The 1929 Philadelphia A's are considered by many to be one of the greatest ballclubs ever assembled. Led by Grove and Walberg on the mound, and Simmons and Foxx at the plate, the A's won 104 games and easily outdistanced the Yankees by eighteen games. They then made short work of the Cubs in the World Series, defeating their National League rivals in five games. The panorama (30 x 7 inches) displays a very thin strip of light toning along the base (barely visible from behind the frame) and a few extremely tiny surface wrinkles; otherwise it's in apparent Near Mint condition. Excellent clarity and contrast throughout. Framed to total dimensions of 31.5 x 8.5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,320
