1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Jim O'Rourke - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,200

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer Jim O'Rourke of the New York Giants (pose #358-4). All Old Judge cabinets are extremely desirable, especially those of Hall of Famers. One of the great early stars of the game, O'Rourke batted .300 or better in thirteen of his twenty-two years in the National Association, National League, and Players' League, and was a member of seven championship clubs, five of them in Boston during the 1870s. He was also the first player to record a hit in National League history. When O'Rourke returned to the Giants to catch one game on September 22, 1904, at age 52, he became the oldest man to complete a Major League game. The offered card displays strong contrast and incredible detail. The photograph is well centered and in Excellent condition. Light, even wear to the corners, free of any creases, and a clean blank reverse displaying only a few small surface abrasions, which appear to be all that holds this card back from an even higher grade. This is a very striking and attractive Hall of Famer example from one of the nineteenth century's most revered sets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++.
