1887 N172 Old Judge Roger Connor
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200
Extremely attractive N172 Old Judge card of Hall of Famer Roger Connor of the New York Giants (pose #88-1). According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, Connor ranks as the tenth rarest Hall of Famer (out of twenty-eight) in the entire N172 set. Connor was one of the greatest sluggers of the nineteenth century. His 138 career home runs stood as the record until Babe Ruth exceeded it. Clean front, no creases, with superb clarity and photo contrast. Light wear at the corners, with a Vg appearance overall. Graded POOR 10 by SGC (submitted by REA), due to paper loss on the blank reverse from album removal. Flaws such as this "come with the territory" when dealing with nineteenth-century cards, and collectors place far more significance on the strength of the image (which is outstanding in this case) than the technical grade. An outstanding N172 example of Roger Connor worthy of any N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.SOLD FOR $1,200
