1978 Topps Uncut Production-Proof Sheet Featuring Unissued Mike Torrez Card Plus Matching Final-Issue Sheet

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

Fascinating pair of uncut sheets from the 1978 Topps baseball set representing two extremely important elements of the production process: an early-stage production-proof sheet and a final-issue sheet. The production-proof sheet offered here is particularly noteworthy in that it features pitcher Mike Torrez with the New York Yankees in the top row of the sheet while the final-issue sheet depicts Torrez with the Boston Red Sox. The New York Yankees version was never issued as Torrez signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox during the 1977 offseason, and Topps was able to update his trading card prior to releasing the 1978 Topps set. The production-proof sheet features fifty-five cards arranged in five rows of eleven cards each. Measuring approximately 28-3/8 x 21-3/8 inches, the sheet displays a large top margin and color bars along the bottom edge. The reverse is blank and features an ink stamp near the top edge that reads "August 1989 Topps Auction NYC," which signifies this piece originated at the famous 1989 Topps/Guernsey's auction. The sheet presents as Near Mint, with brilliant colors and only a small crease in the top left corner of the blank margin (no cards are affected). The final-issue sheet features sixty-six cards arranged in six rows of eleven cards each. Measuring approximately 28.5 x 21.25 inches, the sheet represents one-half of a complete 132-card sheet, with fully printed backs, and has been neatly cut along the bottom edge. The sheet presents as Near Mint, with brilliant colors, but technically grades lower due to light creasing on some of the interior cards and light wear along the edges and at the corners, flaws that are common to uncut sheets due to their size. This is a superb pair of original uncut sheets, highlighted by the extremely significant unissued New York Yankees card of Mike Torrez, which would be worthy additions to any collection of Topps relics, uncut sheets, or card-production items. Total: 2 uncut sheets. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,080
