1968 Topps 3-D Boog Powell

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Presented is a very rare example of Baltimore Orioles star Boog Powell from the 1968 Topps 3-D set. While all 1968 Topps 3-Ds are very rare, Powell has been cited by a number of collectors over the years as being a particularly rare subject in the set. In the world of baseball-card collecting, many serious collectors revere the 1968 Topps 3-D set more than any other set of its era. Whether these cards were issued in stores remains a mystery, but legend has always had it that, as a test, a few boxes appeared in selected stores in the Brooklyn, New York, area. To the best of our knowledge, however, most 1968 Topps 3-D cards can ultimately be traced back to someone who worked at Topps. Advanced collectors have always held 1968 Topps 3-D cards in the highest esteem, both for their extreme rarity as well as for their very striking and unique design. The fragile nature of all 3-D cards (very susceptible to surface cracks) makes high-grade examples all the rarer. The offered card presents at first glance as NM/MT. It is free of any cracks or creases and has only been downgraded (as best as we can tell) due to a very light, almost imperceptible, indentation of the number "60" on the reverse. This is a very attractive sample card from this highly prized set, which would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced Topps or Baltimore Orioles collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,080
