1966 Topps Venezuelan #288 Don Sutton Rookie Card

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $420

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Outstanding example of one of the key cards to the 1966 Topps Venezuelan set, the rookie card of Hall of Famer Don Sutton (Los Angeles Dodgers). The Topps Venezuelan issues are among the most fascinating sets of the 1960s. The first 370 cards of Topps’ 1966 baseball set were reprinted on a non-glossy cardboard stock for sale exclusively in the Venezuelan market. The fronts are identical in design to the regular-issue Topps’ cards, but the backs are a darker orange than normal. While this card is far from Mint condition, it is far above average for this unusual issue. They are almost always found with light paper loss and scrapbook remnants on the reverse, since these cards were intended to be glued into an album produced for that purpose. This card is a rare exception to this rule: the back is entirely clean and intact. The card displays light, even wear to the corners, which is responsible for the EX grade (as opposed to an even higher grade). It is otherwise bright, crisp, and clean. Though they receive little attention because they are virtually never found in high grade, Topps Venezuelan cards are among the most unusual and rare baseball-card sets of the decade. This is a virtually unheard of high-grade Venezuelan example of one of the key rookie cards of the decade, and one that would be a highlight to any Topps Venezuelan, type-card, or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $420
