1963 Topps Near-Complete Set (550/576)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $3,900

Extremely attractive near-complete set of 1963 Topps baseball, consisting of 550 different cards (out of 576 in a complete set). This near-complete 1963 Topps set is loaded with star cards, including Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell (rookie) in the difficult high-number series. Consigned from an old-time collection, this near-complete set appears to have been assembled in the year of issue and has remained untouched ever since. These cards look like they were just printed! 24% Nr/Mt (including some better), 33% Ex-Mt, and 43% Ex (including some miscut or lesser). Brilliant colors, crisp images, bright white borders, and sharp corners! Centering, which is commonly an issue with this set, is the only flaw on almost all of the lesser-graded cards. We have selected two cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC.

Keys: #25 Kaline (Ex-Mt), 115 Yastrzemski (Ex-Mt+), 120 Maris (Nr/Mt), 138 Mays/Musial (Ex+), 173 Bombers' Best with Mantle (NM 84), 200 Mantle (EX/NM 80), 210 Koufax (Ex-Mt), 242 Banks/Aaron (Ex+), 250 Musial (Ex), 275 Mathews (no right border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 320 Spahn (Ex+), 340 Berra (Fr), 345 B. Robinson (Ex-Mt), 360 Drysdale (Ex-Mt), 380 Banks (Ex-Mt), 390 Aaron (Nr/Mt), 400 F. Robinson (Nr/Mt), 412 Dodgers' Big Three with Koufax (Nr/Mt), 415 Gibson (Ex-Mt), 446 Ford (Ex-Mt), 490 McCovey (Ex), 500 Killebrew SP (Ex), 540 Clemente (Ex-Mt), 550 Snider (Ex-Mt), and 553 Stargell RC (Ex+). Missing the following twenty-six cards for completion: #1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 18 Buc Blasters, 31, 46, 53, 54, 64, 66, 68 Friendly Foes, 69, 71, 77, 84, 95, 104, 215, 300 Mays, 440 Marichal, 441, 472 Brock, 495, and 537 Rose RC.

The flush-to-the-bottom-border design of the 1963 Topps baseball set makes this issue particularly susceptible to edge and corner wear, and makes the assembly of high-grade sets all the more difficult. This is an extremely attractive near-complete set that provides an outstanding foundation for the assembly of a high-grade complete set requiring just a little bit of effort to fill in the twenty-six missing cards and replace the cards with extreme centering issues. The equivalent SMR value for just the two graded cards (not including the 548 ungraded cards!) is $400. Total: 550 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,900
