1887 N172 Old Judge Sam Thompson

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $840

Very striking 1887 N172 Old Judge example of Hall of Famer Sam Thompson (pose #456-4) with an elaborate studio background. In 1887 Thompson led the National League with 545 at-bats, 203 hits, 23 triples, 166 RBI (the highest RBI total in the nineteenth century), a .372 batting average, and a .571 slugging percentage. Do not be fooled by the modest assigned grade! This card is bright, crisp, and clean, with four square corners, a flawless surface, and superb contrast and image quality. Graded POOR 10 by SGC, due to paper loss and glue residue on the blank reverse from album removal. Flaws such as this "come with the territory" when dealing with nineteenth-century cards, and collectors place much more significance on the strength of the image (which is outstanding in this case) instead of the technical grade. A tremendous N172 example of Sam Thompson worthy of any N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
