1961 Topps Second/Third Series Uncut Sheet with #150 Willie Mays
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,700
Original 1961 Topps blank-back full uncut sheet from this popular set, containing a total of 132 cards arranged in eleven rows of twelve cards. The sheet features forty-four double-printed cards from the second and third series (representing eighty-eight total cards) along with forty-four single-printed cards and is highlighted by eight cards featuring Hall of Famers. The eight Hall of Fame cards are #120 Ed Mathews (two), 132 Al Lopez (Mgr), 136 Walt Alston (Mgr), 141 Billy Williams RC (two), 150 Willie Mays, 160 Whitey Ford. While the fronts of these cards all present as final-production examples, the back of the sheet is entirely blank, signifying that this 132-card sheet was pulled from the production process (possibly for proofing purposes) before it had received reverse printing. Full 1961 Topps uncut sheets are very rare. In fact, a quick search of our auction archives reveals that REA has never previously offered a full 132-card 1961 Topps baseball sheet! The sheet presents with strong visual appeal, maintaining the same vibrant colors as it did fifty-four years ago. It does, however, display a few technical flaws throughout, including wear along the edges and at the corners and three tears that each affect two of the perimeter cards. These flaws are commonly found in sheets due to their large size. Despite these faults, it is perfect for framing and display, which would naturally minimize the flaws and give the sheet an Excellent appearance. The offered sheet would make an outstanding display piece and be a significant addition to any advanced uncut-sheet collection. Dimensions: 28 x 42.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $500++.
