1887 N172 Old Judge Mike "King" Kelly - Boston Portrait
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900
Exceptional example of this particularly rare portrait pose (#254-3) of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly with "Boston" on his jersey, identified as "$10,000 Kelly." All Old Judge portrait cards are very distinctive and highly prized by collectors, especially those few featuring Hall of Famers. This portrait pose, featuring Mike "King" Kelly with Boston, is one of the most desirable cards in the Old Judge set. Kelly earned this nickname when he was sold from Boston to Chicago following the 1887 season for this then unheard-of sum. This card was issued very shortly after his historic sale to Boston and features a majestic portrait of Kelly. The card features four square corners, a flawless surface, and superb contrast and clarity. Graded FAIR 20 by SGC due to album residue and a tape stain on the blank reverse. Flaws such as this "come with the territory" when dealing with nineteenth-century cards, and collectors place much more significance on the strength of the image (which is outstanding in this case) instead of the technical grade. A tremendous N172 example of Mike "King" Kelly's rare Boston portrait, one his most impressive cards, worthy of any world-class N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.SOLD FOR $3,900
