1963 Post Cereal Original Paste-Up Artwork Production Board
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $480
Presented is the actual original camera-ready production art from the 1963 Post Cereal series used to produce five cards in the set. While photographs of the players are used (as opposed to artwork), this is the equivalent of the art for these cards, and this is the actual production portfolio board used by the Post Cereal art department in October 1962 (as printed on the front cover) to finalize designs for the fourth and final card series produced by the company for promotional use across its various breakfast-food product lines. This particular group of five cards was designed to appear on the back of Oat Flakes boxes. The offered art portfolio, which measures approximately 15 x 19 inches, consists of three layers: 1) the cover bearing a label which reads "October 1962/ 10 oz. Oat Flakes P-3542-C/ Baseball Promotion/ Card Art"; 2) a thin artist's board on which camera-ready paste-ups of all card text have been prepared with openings cut out where the player image would be displayed. Production notations are visible in the margins; and 3) a thick artist's board on which actual Kodachrome pictures of the five players (#69 Held, 85 Siebern, 127 Cardenas, 186 Mejias, and 195 Neal) have been mounted. The Neal photo has loosened over the years. Production notations are visible in the margins and next to several of the photos. The second layer has become detached from the portfolio in a few areas, but the vintage tape which held it in place remains at the top. Some portfolios are found with a wax-paper overlay for color adjustments or production notations, but that is not the case with the offered example. Overall Excellent to Near Mint condition. This is one of a remarkable archive of twenty-six Post Cereal card production boards that surfaced in 2003 and were sold together at auction (realizing $18,520). Apparently the lot was broken up, but this is one of the few we have ever seen or offered, and it is an extremely impressive Post Cereal card related item! This is an outstanding and extraordinarily unique piece which offers great insight into the production process for Post Cereal cards and would be a significant addition to any original card-artwork or card-production collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $480
