1959 Bazooka Willie Mays
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $300
Presented is a very attractive example of New York Giants Hall of Famer Willie Mays from the 1959 Bazooka set. This was Bazooka's first baseball card set, and all twenty-two players featured were, of course, very significant players of the day. Bazookas are package-design cards that were hand-cut from boxes. They will often not receive numerical grades due to their cut (which is so often imperfect), even if they are otherwise in Nr/Mt condition. The offered Mays is graded VG/EX 50 by SGC (submitted by REA) and is one of only twelve numerically graded examples of Mays (at any level) ever evaluated by SGC. Bright, crisp, and clean, the card features bold colors, strong corners, and a neat cut along all four edges. The 1959 Bazooka set has always been revered as one of the rarest and most difficult to collect of all Topps-related sets. Issued just one card per box of Topps Bazooka-brand bubble gum, the cards were intended to be hand-cut by youngsters from the bottom of Bazooka boxes. 1959 Bazooka is one of the few issues of the late 1950s which is scarce and has always had a mystique. The offered example of Mays would make an outstanding addition to any 1959 Bazooka set or collection of Willie Mays, Hall of Famers, or food-issue cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $300
