Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,300

Presented is a near-complete ultra high-grade master set of 1962 Salada-Junket Coins. Each coin is professionally graded by PSA, including sixty-three PSA MINT 9s. The set currently ranks sixth on the PSA Set Registry with an impressive overall GPA of 7.98. The offered assembly features a near-complete basic set of 213 (out of 221) coins and thirty-seven (out of forty-four) variations for a total of 250 (out of 265) coins. Missing only #2, 11, 18, 41 Mantle, 60, 66, 104, and 204 for completion of the basic set and #28b, 48a, 53b, 87b, 113a, 129a, and 182a for completion of the master set. This extremely attractive full-color coin set was issued one coin per package with Salada Tea and Junket Pudding mix. The set features all the major stars of the era, including Mantle, Mays, Clemente, Aaron, Koufax, Banks, Maris, Snider, and many more. It is also full of variations, some of which are incredibly scarce like Brandt/Orioles, which make the assembly of a complete master set especially difficult.

This is a very substantial, scarce, and attractive issue, loaded with rarities, stars, and Hall of Famers, which has been overlooked by collectors in recent years. Few collectors realize how difficult a master set is to assemble. Salada coins are also one of the more interesting choices of premiums ever devised to help generate sales of a product. We understand the issuing of these coins with desserts, but when you get right down to it, it's just hard to imagine what Salada was thinking when they also issued these with tea. Even in the early 1960s, few youngsters were drinking tea, and even those that did have an occasional cup could not possibly be expected to drink enough to actually collect this set, issued one coin per box. But this is part of the charm of the set; and the unique designs, great players, and unmistakable early 1960s flavor of the set make this issue a classic of the era. This set has been carefully assembled by our consignor over a period of many years, and the grading fees alone on 250 coins is substantial. This is an extraordinarily impressive ultra high-grade near-complete master set of this attractive and colorful 1960s set with countless highlights. Total: 250 coins. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
