1887 N172 Old Judge SGC-Graded Minneapolis Collection (3) Including Very Scarce Sterling!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

Outstanding trio of Minneapolis Millers players from the N172 Old Judge series, highlighted by a particularly attractive example of Sterling (pose #439-1). According to the comprehensive book The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) - commonly referred to as the "Old Judge Book," Sterling is a particularly rare subject in the entire N172 set, and is listed as among the "Top 100 Scarcest N172s." In fact, it is one of just thirty-four cards designated for reference as "Very Scarce" in the Old Judge Book, trailing behind only the virtually impossible eighteen California League player cards (designated "Ultimate Rarities") and twenty additional special rarities deemed "Significant Rarities." The other two subjects included in this lot are Howes (pose #237-2) and Shaw (pose #414-5). Each card is graded and encapsulated by SGC. 1) Howes: POOR 10. Crisp image, with several condition flaws, including chipping in the lower right corner and along the left edge. 2) Shaw: FAIR 20. Strong photo contrast, even wear to the corners, and writing on the blank reverse. 3) Sterling: FAIR 20. Presents as Ex from the front, with outstanding photo clarity, light touches at the corners, and light paper loss on the blank reverse. Serious nineteenth-century collectors value strong images over technical grade, and each example in this trio presents with a superb image despite the technical flaws, many of which "come with the territory" when dealing with blank-back nineteenth-century cards. This is a superb group of three N172 examples, highlighted by Sterling, which will be of special interest to advanced Old Judge collectors for its noted scarcity. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
