1951 Bowman Complete Set (324)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,100
Extremely attractive mid-grade complete set of 1951 Bowman baseball cards. This classic 324-card set includes many Hall of Famers and stars, highlighted by the rookie cards of Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. This is an extremely consistent set, appearing from the fronts to be overall Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt condition, but flaws on the reverse, such as small areas of paper loss, cause many of these cards to grade Vg or lesser. Taking these flaws into account, condition is 16% Ex-Mt, 21% Ex, 10% Vg-Ex, 45% Vg, and 8% lesser. While the condition of cards from this set technically spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are extremely pleasing. Two cards are professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Keys: #1 Ford RC (Gd), 2 Berra (Vg), 3 Roberts (Gd, appears to be signed), 7 Hodges (Gd), 26 Rizzuto (Ex), 30 Feller (Ex), 31 Campanella (Vg), 32 Snider (Gd), 46 Kell (Vg+), 50 Mize (Vg+), 53 Lemon (Vg-Ex+), 58 Slaughter (Vg+), 78 Wynn (Ex), 80 Reese (Vg+), 134 Spahn (Vg), 151 Doby (Vg-Ex+), 165 Williams (Gd), 181 Stengel (Ex), 186 Ashburn (Vg+), 198 Irvin RC (Vg-Ex+), 232 Fox RC (Gd/Vg), 233 Durocher (Vg), 253 Mantle RC (VG 40), and 305 Mays RC (GOOD 30). This is a very attractive set which, as noted, has many cards with an appearance far superior to their technical grades. One of the great things about card collecting is that the most classic card sets can be collected in any condition, on any budget. There is always an extremely strong demand for classic vintage sets that are impressive yet are still relatively affordable. This is a very consistent mid-grade set which offers a potentially outstanding collecting value (especially as included are highly sought-after examples of #253 Mickey Mantle and #305 Willie Mays), and represents a rarely offered, far more affordable alternative to a higher-grade set of this classic early 1950s Bowman issue. Total: 324 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,100
