1949 Bowman Near-Complete Set (222/240)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $3,900

Near-complete set of 1949 Bowman consisting of 222 different cards (out of 240 in set). Missing the following eighteen cards for completion: #20, 21, 24 Musial, 29 Kiner, 181, 182, 186, 187, 189, 194 Branca, 203, 206, 211, 216, 218, 220, 224 Paige, and 225. This collection was consigned by the family of the original owner and was presented to us (along with groups of cards from the 1948 Leaf, 1948 Bowman, and 1950 Bowman sets, which appear elsewhere in the auction) housed in a vintage album, carefully held in place by corner mounts. It is clear from their condition that these cards were enjoyed by a youngster prior to residing in this album, but their preservation in this manner for many decades undoubtedly helped preserve their bold color, which contributes to the overall exceptional visual appeal of this set. Condition is 31% Vg-Ex (including a few Ex), 64% Vg, and 5% Gd. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Bickford (Gd), 11 Boudreau (Vg), 23 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 26 Kell (Vg), 27 Feller (Gd), 33 Spahn (Vg), 36 Reese (Vg), 46 Roberts RC (Vg), 50 Robinson (EX 60), 60 Berra (Vg+), 64 D. DiMaggio (Fr), 65 Slaughter (Vg), 70 Furillo RC (Vg-Ex), 84 Campanella RC (VG+ 45), 85 Mize (Vg), 98 Rizzuto (Vg), 100 Hodges RC (VG/EX+ 55), 110 Wynn RC (Vg), 111 Schoendienst (Vg), 162 Roe RC (Vg), 175 Appling (Vg), 210 Gordon (Vg), 214 Ashburn RC (Vg), 226 Snider RC (Vg+), 229 Lopat RC (Vg), 233 Doby (Vg), 238 Lemon (Vg-Ex), and 240 Young (Gd/Vg). 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. This collection could provide an outstanding economical foundation for the completion of the classic 1949 Bowman set. The equivalent SMR value for just the Jackie Robinson graded card is $575. Total: 222 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,900
