1952 to 1954 Dixie Lids Partial and Complete Set Collection (4 sets, 78 lids) Including 14 Extremely Rare 1952 Examples!
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,200
Presented is an extremely substantial and remarkably comprehensive collection of seventy-eight baseball Dixie Lids from three early 1950s sets, highlighted by fourteen extremely rare 1952 examples, including Hall of Famers Richie Ashburn, Monte Irvin, and Ralph Kiner. Dixie Lids are one of the most fascinating of all food issues in that they were designed as tops for the company's line of ice-cream products and featured well-known sports and movie stars on the inside as a further enticement to young consumers. Originally created in the 1930s, the idea was revived in the early 1950s, but not without complications related to the first issue in 1952. Contractual difficulties with specific players slated to be featured in the set halted the release so long, in fact, the next year's lids were already ready to be issued. Some believe that as a result, the 1952 set was scrapped entirely, resulting in no public issue, while others believe that a small quantity made it out the door as evidenced by the varying conditions in which they are found, including some with apparent ice-cream staining. Whatever the case, to this day examples from the 1952 set are extremely rare and a complete set is not known to exist. The 1953 and 1954 sets, while more readily available than their 1952 counterparts, are still scarce in complete set form and include several variations that make assembling a complete set very difficult. This incredible assembly has been consigned by an advanced Dixie Lids specialist, who has spent many years studying the set, its history, and its intricacies, resulting in the offered collection. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1952 Dixie Lids Partial Set (14/24 lids): Ashburn (HOF), Byrne, Carrasquel, Castiglione, Cooper, Fain, Irvin (HOF), Kiner (HOF), Michaels, Mueller, Seminick, Shantz, Trucks, and Woodling. All lids feature Velvet Ice Cream ads on back except for two Sealtest Ice Cream (Mueller and Shantz) and Sanitary Ice Cream (Kiner). All lids present as Ex from the front, with one lesser. Nine lids show staining or wear on the reverse (top side). Thirteen lids are missing the tab, which some collectors, including our consignor, have theorized was done at the factory to prevent the lids from being used on products. 2) 1953 Dixie Lids Complete Master Set (24 lids plus 4 team variations): Includes team variations of Gordon, Kiner, Spahn, and Trucks. Includes ads for Aristocrat Ice Cream (ten), Pure Food Ice Cream (six), Dolly Madison Ice Cream (five), Borden's Ice Cream (two), Wilson's Mello-Pak (one), Medo-Land Mellorine (one), Frozert Mellorine (one), Dixie Cup (one), and Abbotts Ice Cream (one). All but one lid presents as Vg-Ex to Ex from the front (with normal bending at the tab). Half of the lids display minor flaws on the reverse, including staining, small areas of paper loss, or hard to see wrinkles, that would technically cause them to grade lower. 3) 1954 Dixie Lids Complete Right-Tab Set (18 lids): All with tabs positioned to the right of the image. Crisp and clean images, with almost all lids presenting as Ex from the front. Ten lids display minor flaws on the reverse, including staining or hard to see wrinkles, that would technically cause them to grade lower. Includes ads for Thompson's Ice Cream (five), Sealtest Ice Cream (three), Hendler's Ice Cream (three), Meadow Gold Ice Cream (two), Schlosser's Ice Cream (two), Lemke's Deluxe Ice Cream (one), National Ice Cream (one), and Arden Ice Cream (one). 4) 1954 Dixie Lids Complete Left-Tab Set (18 lids): All with tabs positioned to the left of the image. Crisp and clean images, with almost all lids presenting as Ex from the front (three lesser). Four lids display minor flaws on the reverse, including staining or creasing, that would technically cause them to grade lower. Includes ads for Thompson's Ice Cream (eight), Arden Ice Cream (three), Sealtest Ice Cream (one), Hendler's Ice Cream (one), Meadow Gold Ice Cream (one), Borden's Ice Cream (one), Schwen's Ice Cream (one), Frozert Mellorine (one), and Sanitary Ice Cream (one). All seventy-eight lids in this collection are 2.75 inches in diameter. This is a very carefully assembled collection of early 1950s Dixie Lids with numerous notable highlights. Representing the culmination of many years of diligent collecting by our consignor, this is an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of the most advanced collections of this food issue ever assembled. Total: 78 lids. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $10,200
