1920s to 1940s Cuban Baseball Card and Card-Related Collection

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,160

Fascinating collection of Cuban cards, premiums, and related items dating from the 1920s to the 1940s and featuring several Hall of Famers, including Ted Williams, Martin Dihigo, and a very early, pre-rookie image of Monte Irvin. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1924-1925 Aguilitas Segunda Album: Complete unused album intended to house all 900 cards issued as part of the second series of Aguilitias issued during the 1920s. Fifteen blank, numbered spaces are positioned on each page. The interior pages are Near Mint. The front cover retains its ornate printing but displays mild wear at the corners and along the edges, as does the back cover. Overall Very Good. 2) 1924 Diaz Cigarettes: #2 Hoyt (HOF), 8 Mays, and 85 Rixey (HOF). Diaz Cigarette cards are among the most elusive and unusual of all tobacco issues. The cards were printed in 1924 in Havana, Cuba, for the Diaz Cigarettes brand and feature only Major League pitchers. The three cards presented here present well but technically grade Poor due to holes in the stock. 3) 1940s Alerta Antonio Alcalde Premium Pictures: Complete factory-bound set of seventy premiums in book form. According to The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, this set was issued by a newspaper or sports periodical in Cuba during the late 1940s/early 1950s. Each premium is printed on semigloss paper (8 x 11 inches) and features black-and-white photos of players from four different teams: the Almendares Scorpions; the Cienfuegos Elephants; the Habana Lions; and the Marianao Tigers. The premiums for each team are color coded along the base in blue, green, red, or orange. There are eighteen subjects for both Almendares and Habana clubs, and seventeen each for the other two clubs. The most prominent star in the set is Hall of Famer Ray Dandridge. Little information is known about this set and exactly how it was issued. Each premium is bright and crisp, with light toning on the reverse along with traces of a small ink stamp. Tightly bound along the left edge with minor wear visible to the front and back covers (Vg). Also included is a duplicate of Dandridge in Vg condition, with a small pencil notation and ink stamp on reverse. 4) 1946-1947 Sensacion Premiums: Complete set of 11 Major Leaguers, including Ted Williams and Stan Musial, and near-complete set of 23/27 Cuban players, including Martin Dihigo. Missing only Monteagudo, Pages, Marrero, and Hidalgo for completion. Scarce premium issue produced by Sensacion magazine during the winter league season of 1946-1947. Each premium is printed in color on newspaper stock and measures approximately 7.75 x 12 inches. A player photo graces one side, with biographical and statistical information on the reverse. Condition is modest, with several flaws visible along the edges and at the corners of the delicate newspaper stock. 5) 1948-1949 Almendares Team Composite Premium: Measuring 12 x 17.5 inches, this piece commemorates the Cuban League Championship won by the Almendares during the 1948-1949 season and features black-and-white photos of team members with colorized hats. Future Hall of Famer Monte Irvin (identified as Irving) is pictured in the composite as a right fielder. The premium has been folded in the middle and displays several small holes at the top (from hanging) and scattered unobtrusively around the piece, which would cause it to grade modestly but does not detract from its outstanding display value. This is a fascinating collection of Cuban cards and related material, including several scarcely seen premium issues that will surely excite advanced collectors. Total: 109 cards and premiums and one album. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,160
