1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars Complete PSA-Graded Set (11): #5 PSA Set Registry!

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $9,000

This landmark set issued by Topps in its first year in the baseball-card business features Connie Mack’s All-Time team of great players. Offered is an exceptionally attractive complete set of all eleven cards, highlighted by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The entire set is graded and encapsulated by PSA (all submitted by REA). One thing about 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars: because of their diecut design, there are so many little things that can get these cards downgraded that they sometimes look a lot better than their technical grades suggest. That is certainly the case here. This is a spectacular set! All cards are complete with backgrounds intact. This set has been carefully assembled over a period of years by a pioneer collector who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition and overall eye-appeal.

PSA Grading Composite: Grover Alexander (EX 5), Mickey Cochrane (VG-EX+ 4.5), Eddie Collins (EX 5), Jimmy Collins (EX 5), Lou Gehrig (VG-EX 4), Walter Johnson (EX-MT 6, highest graded, 1 of 3 at this level), Connie Mack (VG-EX 4), Christy Mathewson (EX 5), Babe Ruth (EX 5), Tris Speaker (EX-MT 6), and Honus Wagner (EX+ 5.5). This assembly currently ranks fifth on the PSA Set Registry with an overall GPA of 4.94.

Because these die-cut cards are designed to stand up by folding back the backgrounds, they are particularly prone to damage and are often found with the backgrounds damaged or completely removed. This is an extraordinarily attractive complete set of this milestone Topps issue: one of the rarest, most significant, and most condition-sensitive of all postwar card issues. In our opinion, the 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars is also one of the most undervalued of all postwar sets. (This is perhaps due in part to the harsh grading these die-cut cards receive. In the old days of the hobby, this set would have been considered EX-MT or better across the board! We understand the technical issues natural to these cards that are responsible for the PSA grades, but want to emphasize that this is an exceptionally beautiful set worthy of any world-class collection.) The SMR value for just eight of the graded cards (excluding the three cards graded less than EX) is $5,355. Total: 11 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $9,000
