1939-1946 W462 Salutation Exhibits Near-Complete Set (81/83)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,900

Presented is an outstanding near-complete set of W462 Salutation Exhibits consisting of eighty-one out of the eighty-three cards in the set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog. Also included are two duplicates. This near-set is highlighted by all of the rarities within the set, including the Ted Williams (#9 on back) variation. These unnumbered cards are not dated and were issued over a series of years, so they are generally collected as a single set. Some cards in this Exhibit-card series were issued for numerous years, while other players were issued for only a short period of time, thus creating many rarities. Because they have the player's signature and a "salutation" scripted at the bottom, they are often referred to as "Salutation Exhibits." The rarities in this set make the assembly of a complete set one of the most difficult of all Exhibit-card sets. This is the most complete collection we have ever offered. The two missing cards are Keller/Made in USA left corner and Marion/An Exhibit Card left corner. The cards in this collection are extremely bright, fresh, and attractive. Condition is 60% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt and 40% Gd to Vg (with just a few techincally lesser). Most of the cards grading Gd to Vg have been downgraded for writing (pencil) or small areas of paper loss on the blank reverse (slightly more paper loss on the lesser-graded examples), and otherwise appear Vg-Ex to Ex. Keys: Averill (Ex), Dean (Vg), two DiMaggio (Ex-Mt and Vg), Feller/port. (erased pencil on reverse, otherwise Ex+), Feller/pitching (Ex-Mt), Foxx (pencil on reverse, otherwise Ex+), Gehrig (Pr, paper loss on back, pictured below), Gehringer (pencil on reverse, otherwise Ex), Gomez (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex+), Greenberg/Very truly yours (Gd/Vg), Hartnett (Vg-Ex+), Holmes/Sincerely yours (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Klein (Fr), Kreevich (Ex), Lombardi/Cordially (Vg-Ex), Mulcahy (Ex+), Newson (Fr), Rizzo (Vg-Ex+), Vander Meer (Vg), Williams/#9 shows (small spot of pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), and Williams/#9 not showing (Ex). A duplicate of Rudy York (in addition to the DiMaggio listed above) is included as well. Also included are two header cards (one red and one green), which were placed in vending machines to advertise the Exhibits. Both present as Vg-Ex to Ex, with pencil on the reverse. This rare near-set is part of a sizeable Exhibit-card collection, assembled over a period of many years by an advanced old-time collector, that is being offered in a number of smaller lots (mostly by year) in this auction. This is a very attractive, overall high-grade, rarely seen near-set of this classic Exhibit Supply Company issue. Total: 83 cards (near-complete set of 81 plus 2 duplicates) and two Exhibit machine header cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,900
