1941 R336 Play Ball Complete Set Minus 1 (71/72) with 36 PSA-Graded and 35 Duplicates!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,100

Extremely attractive complete set minus one of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues. This full-color near-complete set is comprised of seventy-one of the seventy-two total cards and includes many Hall of Famers and stars, highlighted by Ted Williams. It is missing only Joe DiMaggio for completion. Approximately half the set (thirty-five cards) has been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. The PSA condition report is as follows: One NM 7: #33. Ten EX-MT 6: #12, 16, 20 Ruffing (HOF), 30, 31, 34, 44, 64 Doerr (HOF), 66, and 68. Twelve EX 5: #2, 5, 7, 8 Ott (HOF), 11, 29, 38, 39, 58, 61 V. DiMaggio, 63 D. DiMaggio, and 67. One VG-EX+ 4.5: #28. Seven VG-EX 4: #13 Foxx (HOF), 25, 55, 60 Klein (HOF), 65, 70 Dickey (HOF), and 72 Gomez (HOF). Three VG 3: #6 Hubbell (HOF), 18 Greenberg (HOF), and 37. One GOOD 2: #14 Williams (HOF). Ungraded Keys: #1 Miller (Vg), 10 Vaughan (HOF, Vg-Ex), 15 Cronin (HOF, Vg-Ex), 19 Gehringer (HOF, Vg+), and 54 Reese RC (HOF, Vg). The balance of the cards grade eleven Vg-Ex to Ex, twelve Vg, and eight lesser, including a few with irregular cuts/slight trimming. Also included are thirty-five duplicates, which range in grade from Vg to Ex, with eleven lesser, including a few with irregular cuts/slight trimming. Key Duplicates: #18 Greenberg (HOF, Gd), 20 Ruffing (HOF, Vg), 61 V. DiMaggio (Vg-Ex), 63 D. DiMaggio (Vg), and 64 Doerr (HOF, Gd/Vg). One duplicate is graded (#66, EX 5). This is a very attractive complete set (minus one), spanning a variety of different grades, that with a few easy upgrades could be an exceptionally strong mid-grade set. Early classic sets in this condition are especially desirable, representing the most solid and least volatile collecting value in the world of vintage cards. The total SMR value for just the thirty-five graded cards (factoring in the one half-grade at the lower whole-grade level and not including the additional thirty-six cards in the set, and also not including the additional thirty-five duplicates!) is $2,763. Total: 106 cards (near-complete set of 71 cards plus 35 duplicates). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $5,100
