1933 R306 Butter Cream Complete SGC-Graded Set Minus One (29/30)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $4,200

Exceedingly rare near-complete set of R306. Presented is a collection of twenty-nine of the thirty cards which comprise the classic 1933 R306 Butter Cream issue, highlighted by fifteen Hall of Famers. Missing only the extremely rare (and very costly) Babe Ruth card for completion. The 1933 R306 set produced by Butter Cream is considerably rarer than Goudeys and most other 1930s sets, and has long been recognized by serious collectors as among the most elusive and desirable issues of the era. Ruth is so rare (only a few examples are known to exist) that most collectors consider the set complete at just twenty-nine cards.

All twenty-nine cards in this collection have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. SGC Grading Composite: Three VG 40: Bush, O'Farrell, and Wilson (HOF). Four GOOD 30: Earnshaw, Gelbert, Martin, and Ruel. Eleven FAIR 20: Averill (HOF), Brandt, Cronin (HOF), Grove (HOF), Hartnett (HOF), Herman, Klein (HOF), Lyons (HOF), Terry (HOF), Uhle, and L. Waner (HOF). Seven POOR 10: Ferrell, Foxx (HOF), Frisch (HOF), Root, Simmons (HOF, Lionel Carter Collection), P. Waner (HOF), and Wright. Four Authentic: Cochrane (HOF), Kremer, Lindstrom (HOF), and Rommel. While this set is technically in modest grade, many of the cards (as can easily be seen) present far better than suggested by their assigned grades, which are often due only to minor flaws on the reverse. A set of R306 Butter Cream does not just come together; it has to be carefully assembled over a period of years by a dedicated collector. In fact, this offering is the largest group and only set of R306 that REA has EVER offered! The only collection that has come close to this set (minus Ruth) that we have ever had the privilege of offering was Charlie Conlon's personal near-complete collection of twenty-seven different cards that were sold at REA in May 2009. (And Charlie Conlon spent thirty years assembling his collection, as R306 Butter Cream was one of his several favorite sets that for decades he sought all examples from, including duplicates.) This is an exceptional, attractive, and extraordinarily rare complete set (minus one) of R306 Butter Cream, one of the most popular, elusive, and distinctive 1930s card issues. Total: 29 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $4,200
