1936 R311 Glossy & 1936 R311 Leather Finish Premiums Complete Sets (2 sets)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,680
Rarely offered complete sets of R311 Glossy and Leather Finish Premiums, consisting of twenty-eight and fifteen premiums, respectively. Issued by the National Chicle Company, each premium measures 6 x 8 inches and features black-and-white photos on the front with blank reverses. The Leather Finish premiums have a distinctive "leather-like" surface, as described in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, which make them different from other sets of the era. The condition of the premiums in this collection spans several grades. The twenty-eight Glossy Finish Premiums technically grade rather modestly due to a variety of flaws, including pinholes, creasing, writing, or album residue (the latter two flaws are visible exclusively on the blank reverses). All the premiums have crisp images. The fifteen Leather Finish Premiums also vary in condition, with seven ranging in grade from Vg to Ex and eight grading more modestly, due to light creasing or flaws on the blank reverses. The flaws present throughout both sets do not take away at all from the impressive presentation and outstanding display value of many of the premiums. Complete sets of R311 Glossy and Leather Finish Premiums are seen with far less frequency than most other premium issues of the 1930s. These are two presentable, technically modest-grade sets, loaded with Hall of Famers, including Joe DiMaggio, Jimmy Foxx, Rogers Hornsby, Connie Mack, Honus Wagner, and Babe Ruth, who appears on the Boston Braves team premium. Total: 2 sets, 43 premiums. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,680
