1940 R335 Play Ball Complete Set Minus One (239/240)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,100

Presented is a rarely offered and extremely consistent complete set (missing one card) of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc. Missing only #225 Joe Jackson for completion. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards! 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set, and the rarity of complete sets has been significantly underappreciated. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, in part due to its extraordinary break value, and the inclusion of several particularly valuable key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams). Five cards are graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (GOOD 30), 6 Gomez (Fr), 7 Dickey (Vg-Ex), 10 Ruffing (Vg+), 21 Ferrell (Gd), 27 Williams (VG 40), 30 Berg (Vg), 38 Doerr (Vg), 40 Greenberg (Fr), 41 Gehringer (Gd/Vg), 46 Averill (Vg-Ex), 87 Hubbell (Vg), 88 Ott (no left border, otherwise Ex), 102 Klein (Pr), 104 P. Waner (Gd), 105 L. Waner (Vg-Ex), 107 Vaughan (Vg-Ex), 118 Hoyt (Pr), 119 Alexander (Gd), 120 Johnson (Fr), 124 Combs (Ex), 129 Harris (Gd), 132 Mack (Vg), 133 Foxx (Vg), 134 Cronin (Gd), 141 Stengel (Vg-Ex), 142 Kelly (Gd), 153 McKechnie (Pr), 158 T. Jackson (Ex), 167 Frisch (Gd), 168 Wagner (Vg-Ex), 170 Speaker (VG/EX 50), 171 Heilmann (Vg), 172 Bender (Vg), 173 Lajoie (Fr), 174 Evers (no right border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 175 Mathewson (Pr), 176 Manush (Vg), 177 Baker (VG/EX 50), 178 Carey (Fr), 179 Sisler (Fr), 180 Cochrane (Vg), 223 Jennings (NM 84), 224 Traynor (Vg), 226 Hooper (Vg-Ex), 227 Haines (Vg-Ex), 230 Faber (Gd), 232 Goslin (Fr), 234 Chance (Vg-Ex), 235 McGraw (Ex), 236 Bottomley (Fr), 237 Keeler (Ex), and 238 Lazzeri (Gd). The balance of the cards grade 34% Vg-Ex (including a few better), 31% Vg, 20% Gd, and 15% lesser. While the set technically falls into the low- to mid-grade category, it has a very consistent and overall extremely attractive presentation. This is what 1940 gum cards are supposed to look like! Vintage sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing perhaps the most outstanding value in the world of vintage cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the five graded cards (not including the 234 ungraded cards!) is $910. Total: 239 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $5,100
