1920 W519 Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,040
Graded VG 40 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely attractive example of Babe Ruth (unnumbered) from the W519 strip-card series. This classic 1920-era strip-card issue consists of ten cards, and Babe Ruth is unquestionably the key card. Originally issued in strips, these cards (and almost all strip-cards) are often found with irregularly cut borders as they were cut by hand from the strips, as intended. Only ideally cut examples (which are few and far between) are awarded numerical grades by SGC (and PSA). This outstanding example was found by REA mixed in a large group of strip cards and other unusual early card issues in an old-time collection that had not been touched for decades. (The balance of the collection appears elsewhere in this auction. This magnificent Ruth card jumped out as deserving to be its own lot!) The offered example is neatly cut, with light even wear at the corners, and a crisp portrait image of Ruth set against a blue background. The blank back is clean. This is a very desirable example of one of Babe Ruth's most classic 1920s strip cards and one that would be an outstanding addition to any Babe Ruth, strip-card, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,040
