1927 W560 Playing Cards Near-Complete Set (60/64) Including Two Lou Gehrig

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,560

Near-complete set of sixty (out of sixty-four) 1927 W560 Playing Cards plus one duplicate for a total of sixty-one cards. This is a very attractive near-set with numerous highlights, including two high-grade examples of Lou Gehrig. Missing Dumont, Hoyt, Lindbergh, and Ruth for completion. This set was issued on four uncut sheets, each featuring sixteen cards, that were intended to be cut up by hand to create a playing-card deck, as offered here. This near-complete set includes forty-seven of the forty-nine baseball players (including Gehrig from his most legendary season, as well as numerous other Hall of Famers, including Walter Johnson at the end of his career) plus thirteen additional prominent sporting figures of the day. Keys: Bottomley (Vg-Ex+), Cochrane (Vg-Ex), Cuyler (Ex+), Dempsey (Ex-Mt), Foxx (Vg), two Gehrig (EX/NM 80 and EX+ 70), Goslin (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Grove (Vg), Haines (Ex), Hornsby (Vg-Ex+), Johnson (EX/NM 80), Lindstrom (Vg), Pennock (Vg), Simmons (Vg-Ex+), Strong (Ex+), Vance (Ex), L. Waner (Vg-Ex), P. Waner (Ex+). The balance of the cards grade ten Ex-Mt, thirty Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex), and two Gd. W560 is a very substantial set. It also represents one of the very few sets issued in the late 1920s, and includes the first-issued cards of many players. W560 cards are beginning to be recognized for the outstanding value they represent compared with many other vintage cards. Total: 61 cards (near-complete set of 60 plus one duplicate). Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,560
