1923 W515-1 Complete Set (60) Including Two Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,300
Exceptional complete set of W515-1 from an old-time collection! This classic set of 1920s strip cards features twenty-seven Hall of Famers, including #3 Ruth (SGC EX/NM 80), 10 Cobb (Vg), 24 Stengel (Vg-Ex+), 28 Speaker (Vg-Ex), 38 Johnson (miscut, otherwise Ex), and 47 Ruth (pen on front, otherwise Vg). Forty-one cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt condition, fourteen cards grade lesser (mostly Gd to Vg), and five cards are miscut with names at top (otherwise Vg-Ex). Strip cards, of course, are by definition hand-cut, as intended, and are therefore often encapsulated by the third-party grading companies as "Authentic" even if they appear high grade, due to the cuts affecting a small portion of the cutting guide lines. REA grades strip cards slightly differently than the grading companies do. The grades we have provided above do not downgrade the cards for any minor cutting flaws which are natural to strip cards. If submitted to PSA or SGC, it is likely that some of these cards would only grade "Authentic." This is a very attractive complete set, loaded with Hall of Famers, including a particularly high-grade example of #3 Babe Ruth, with a distinctive look and representing a tremendous value, which collectors have recently started to appreciate. Total: 60 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,300
