1921 White's Bakery (Tip Top Bread) Lefty Grove Rookie Card
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $36,000
Presented is the key card to the extremely rare 1921 White's Bakery set: the rookie card of Hall of Famer Lefty Grove (identified as "Groves" on the card). These extremely rare cards were issued exclusively in the Baltimore area with loaves of Tip Top Bread produced by White's Bakery and feature players from the pennant-winning Orioles team of the International League. The offered example is one of only three ever graded by SGC (PSA has not graded any). We believe that only a handful exist in total within the entire collecting world. This particular example originated from the collection of legendary Baltimore-area collector Joe Bosley many years ago and has only changed hands twice since then. This card appeared in REA's Spring 2014 auction as Lot #544 where it realized $18,960. It has been consigned directly from the buyer at that auction (who has very recently changed the focus of his collection from rookie cards to a different area). White's Bakery cards measure 3-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches and are printed on very thin stock, making them very susceptible to damage. This example is extremely pleasing despite its assessment of POOR 10 by SGC. It is well centered with a crisp central image and no tears as are commonly seen on other examples from this set. The blank reverse displays a faint purple-ink stamp with an illegible Baltimore address as well as light residue from the bread packaging. Despite the technical flaws, this card has outstanding visual appeal and represents an incredible opportunity to acquire the Hall of Fame rookie card of Lefty Grove from this extremely rare Baltimore regional issue. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $36,000
