1921 E253 Oxford Confectionery Complete Set (20): #3 PSA Set Registry!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $14,400

Oxford Confectionery cards have always been recognized by advanced collectors as one of the rarest and most unique sets of the early 1920s. Presented is a complete set of all twenty cards (of which fourteen are Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb) issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania, all graded and encapsulated by PSA. This set currently ranks third finest on the PSA Set Registry with an overall GPA of 3.35. Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Pennsylvania was a very popular area for candy manufacturers in the early 1920s, but Oxford Confectionery was a much smaller manufacturer than other Pennsylvania candy companies that issued baseball cards, and this no doubt relates to the far greater rarity of E253 Oxfords compared to other early 1920s caramel cards.

Collectors have always appreciated both the rarity and the distinctive design of this candy issue, which is all the more noteworthy to collectors because it features photos that are unique to this set. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This complete set has been assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of years, and represents a tremendous collecting achievement. PSA Condition Report: One EX-MT+ 6.5: Speaker (HOF). Four EX 5: Carey (HOF), Collins (HOF), Hornsby (HOF), and Rousch (HOF). Four VG-EX 4: Alexander (HOF), Frisch (HOF), Pratt, and Williams. One VG+ 3.5: Bancroft (HOF). Seven VG 3: Grimes (HOF), Holke, Johnson (HOF), Perkins, Schalk (HOF), Sisler (HOF), and Witt. Three GOOD 2: Cobb (HOF), Meadows, and Ruth (HOF). This is an extremely attractive set with strong presentation on almost every card and downgrades due to slight wear on the fragile stock. Due to the high concentration of key Hall of Famers and the inclusion of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, this set naturally has a particularly strong "break value" if desired (though while it can always be broken up, its assembly is not so easy). An exceptional and rarely seen complete set of this distinctive and hard-to-find 1920s candy-card issue. Total: 20 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $14,400
