1921 Gassler's American-Maid Bread Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,920
Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Presented is an extraordinary example of Ty Cobb featuring an extremely rare Gassler's American-Maid Bread advertising reverse. Originating from an advanced type-card collection consigned to this auction, this is one of just two Ty Cobb cards with this back ever graded (the offered example and an SGC GOOD 30) and one of a total of only fifteen cards (of any player!) ever encapsulated by PSA and SGC combined. Gassler's Bread cards share the same fronts with W575-1 strip cards, which are blank-backed. Several bakeries used W575-1s as promotional vehicles, including Gassler, Clark, and Haffner, each of which is particularly rare. The W575-1 set is very similar in nature to the American Caramel Company E121 issue as both sets feature the same design and likenesses for many of the players included. The offered card of Cobb features the Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer in a full throwing pose. While this card will be appreciated by collectors for its great rarity perhaps more so than for its technical grade, it remains an extremely attractive example in all respects. Flawless registration, even wear to the corners, and centered to the right. Downgraded due to light creasing and a small surface chip on the left border. The reverse advertisement is perfectly bold and crisp. This is an extremely striking example of Ty Cobb featuring an ultra rare back advertisement, which would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced Ty Cobb, Hall of Fame, or type-card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,920
