1888 N172 Old Judge Hugh Duffy

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $720

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. 1888 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy (pose #135-1). Very attractive example with 1888 copyright date. Hugh Duffy is credited with one of the greatest single seasons in the history of baseball. Not only did he bat a record .440 in 1894 but he also captured the triple crown by hitting 18 home runs and knocking in 145 RBIs, both incredible numbers at the time. Excellent photo quality, no creases, light, even corner wear. Paper loss on the blank reverse from album removal is responsible for the modest assigned grade. Flaws such as this "come with the territory" when dealing with nineteenth-century cards, and collectors place far more significance on the strength of the image (which is strong in this case) instead of the technical grade. An outstanding N172 example of Hugh Duffy from his rookie season, worthy of any N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
