1887 N184 W. S. Kimball "Champions" Complete SGC-Graded Set of Baseball Players (4)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720

Outstanding collection of the four baseball players from the unusual and scarce 1887 N184 W. S. Kimball & Co.'s "Champions of Games and Sports" series. Three of the cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC as "Authentic" due to evidence of alteration, while one card (O'Neil) was deemed to be rebacked and is not encapsulated. The four players who comprise this set are E. A. Burch, Dell Darling, Hardie Henderson, and James O'Neil. All four cards are very attractive, with vibrant colors, and flawless registration. The Darling card displays moderate creasing, while all four cards present with some back damage, as is common among cards from this era. Kimballs are considered by many to be one of the most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. Although the four baseball players featured in the set are not Hall of Famers, each was a very popular star at the time. This is a rarely offered and relatively affordable complete baseball subset from one of the most stunning and beautifully designed of all nineteenth-century tobacco issues. Total: 4 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
