1916 M101-4/5 Advertising Back Type Collection (11) Including Holmes to Homes and Block & Kuhl
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,560
Presented is a fascinating collection of eleven cards from the 1916 M101-4/5 sets, each featuring a different reverse advertisement, highlighted by extremely rare Holmes to Homes and Block & Kuhl sample cards. The cards in this collection share the same fronts as those issued as part of the M101-4/5 Sporting News sets but are differentiated by their distinct advertising reverses. M101-4/5 Sporting News cards were issued as promotional vehicles for a number of regional businesses, including clothing stores and bakeries throughout the country. These advertising backs vary in scarcity, ranging from almost nonexistent, which is the case with the Holmes to Homes back, to fairly common, as is the case with the Sporting News and blank backs. A terrific reference to the scarcity of the different advertising reverses has been compiled by vintage-card scholars (and M101-4/5 set experts) Tim Newcomb and Todd Schultz and can be found at http://www.oldcardboard.com/m/m101-4/m101pop.asp. Each card in the offered collection features a member of the Cleveland Naps and has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. This collection consists of the following: Blank Back (#176 Turner, EX+ 70), Block & Kuhl (#135 O'Neill, VG 40), Famous & Barr (#71 Graney, FAIR 20), Gimbels (#145 Roth, EX+ 70, wet-sheet transfer on front), Globe Stores (#176 Turner, EX 60), Holmes to Homes (#134 O'Neill, GOOD 30), Herpolsheimer (#64 Gandil, "Black Sox," VG 40), Indianapolis Brewing (#71 Graney, VG 40), Morehouse Baking (#120 Mitchel, VG 40), Sporting News (#145 Roth, EX+ 70), and Weil Baking (#135 O'Neill, FAIR 20). While the condition of these cards varies (several are among the highest-graded examples of any subject with their respective advertising reverse), each is a very presentable sample card, with a boldly printed reverse. This is a very carefully assembled collection of these rare and desirable advertising reverses from the classic M101-4/5 sets, which would serve as worthy additions to even the most advanced prewar-card or type-card collections. Total: 11 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+++.SOLD FOR $1,560
