1911 M116 Sporting Life Collection (68) Including Ten Hall of Famers
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,900
Collection of sixty-two different (plus six duplicates) M116 Sporting Life cards, including ten Hall of Famers. Sporting Life was a major competitor of The Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in 24 series of 12 cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco-card counterparts. This is a very attractive collection of cards spanning several grades. Four cards grade Ex-Mt, thirty-four grade Vg-Ex to Ex, eleven grade Vg, and nineteen grade lesser, several of which present as Vg-Ex to Ex but have a small spot of paper loss on the reverse or show evidence of a slight trim. Keys: Bender (Authentic, pastel), Chance (EX 60, pastel), Cicotte (Fr), Clarke (VG/EX 50, black back), two Crawford (EX 60 and Authentic, both blue background), Evers (EX/NM 80, black back), Mack (VG/EX+ 55), Plank (VG/EX 50), Wallace (EX 60), and Walsh (GOOD 30). Also included are the following (numbers listed according to the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist): #2a, 2b, 12, 18, two 29, 34, 35, 37, 39, two 56, 57, 66a, 76a, two 82, 89, 94, 98, 99, 108, 116, 122, 123, 124, 133, two 134, 145, 146, 150, 151, 154, 157, two 170, 185a, 188, 189a, 190, 216, 222a, 224, 227, 231, 246, 257a, 265, 267, 270, 274, 276, 280, 281, and 283. Many collectors consider M116 to represent one of the era's most exceptional values. This is an extremely attractive collection of cards from this popular set and one that would provide an outstanding foundation for the assembly of a complete mid-grade set of this classic issue. The equivalent SMR value for just eight of the graded cards (excluding the two cards graded "Authentic" and not including the additional 58 cards!) is $1,940. Total: 68 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,900
