1916 M101-4 Mall Theatre #182 Honus Wagner - The First Confirmed Example!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,100
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is an extraordinary example of #182 Hans Wagner from the M101-4 series featuring an extremely scarce Mall Theatre advertising reverse. Originating from an advanced type-card collection consigned to this auction, this is the first confirmed example of Wagner with this back. The M101-4 (and the closely related M101-5) set is commonly referred to as Sporting News (in honor of its most prominent sponsor), but cards were actually issued with a variety of advertising backs as well as with blank backs. To date, only nine cards with the Mall Theatre reverse have been graded by SGC (PSA has graded none). While exact population numbers that account for ungraded examples cannot be known, in their extensive research into the M101-4/5 sets and their advertising backs (http://www.oldcardboard.com/m/m101-4/m101pop.asp), hobby scholars Tim Newcomb and Todd Schultz estimate that Mall Theatre cards are among the most difficult to find (along with Everybody's, Green Joyce, and Holmes to Homes) and account for less than one percent of the entire M101-4/5 production run of all back varieties (Mall Theatre has only been confirmed to appear on M101-4 cards). While this card will be appreciated by collectors for its great rarity and not its technical grade, it remains an extremely attractive example in all respects. The front and back are both clean. The image is bright and crisp, and the contrast is flawless. Centered to the left, with natural rounding to the corners and a few light creases, which account for the modest assigned grade. The reverse advertisement for Mall Theatre is perfectly bold and crisp. This is an extremely striking example of Honus Wagner featuring an ultra rare back advertisement from one of the most important baseball-card issues of the era. A worthy addition to even the most advanced Honus Wagner, Hall of Fame, or type-card collection! Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).SOLD FOR $5,100
