1923 V117 Maple Crispette Complete Set Minus One (29/30): #1 PSA Set Registry (4.36 GPA)!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,000
Rarely offered near-complete set of 1923 V117 Maple Crispettes, consisting of twenty-nine of the thirty cards in this rare Canadian candy issue, highlighted by Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. Missing only #15 Stengel (a virtually impossible rarity in the V117 set) for completion. This is the most complete set of this rare issue we have ever offered! All twenty-nine cards are professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. This set ranks Number One on the PSA Set Registry with an impressive 4.36 GPA. Sixteen of the twenty-nine cards in this set are the highest-graded examples on record, including a single PSA NM 7, which is the highest grade ever given to any V117 by PSA.
PSA Grading Composite: One NM 7: #21 Harris (HOF, 1 of 1, highest graded). One EX-MT 6: #26 (1 of 1, highest graded). One EX+ 5.5: #10 (1 of 1). Thirteen EX 5: #1 Barnes (HOF, highest graded), 3 Schalk (HOF, 1 of 1, highest graded), 4 Collins (HOF, 1 of 1, highest graded), 5 (highest graded), 7 Hoyt (HOF, highest graded), 9 (1 of 1, highest graded), 12 Sewell (HOF, highest graded), 16 (1 of 1, highest graded), 17 (1 of 1), 18 (highest graded), 24 (1 of 1, highest graded), 28 Roush (HOF), and 29 (1 of 1, highest graded). One VG-EX+ 4.5: #25 McKechnie (HOF, 1 of 1). Eight VG-EX 4: #2 Traynor (HOF, highest graded), 6, 8 Ruth (HOF, extremely presentable, with strong corners and centered to the right), 14 (1 of 1), 20 (1 of 1), 23 (highest graded), 27 Pennock (HOF), and 30 Johnson (HOF). One VG+ 3.5: #19 Bottomley (HOF, 1 of 1, highest graded). Three VG 3: #11 (1 of 1), 13 (1 of 1), and 22 Cobb (HOF).
According to the backs, a complete set of thirty cards could be redeemed by mail for valuable prizes (gloves, bats, balls, etc.). This issue was long thought to be complete at twenty-nine cards until a miraculous discovery in the early 1990s of card #15 Stengel, which was obviously short printed to limit Maple Crispettes’ exposure to the prize redemption offer as detailed on the back of each card (complete sets could be exchanged for prizes) and possibly also to encourage more sales. This exceptional lot represents what is essentially a complete set (not counting the impossibly difficult Stengel) of this rare issue, which includes some of the most difficult-to-find cards of many great Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. Total: 29 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $9,000
