1910 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Ty Cobb (Type 1) - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $12,000

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Extremely attractive T213 (Type 1) of Ty Cobb, the key card to this elusive and extremely rare tobacco set. T213 Coupon Cigarettes are one of the most unusual, rarest, and overlooked of all tobacco-card issues. Very similar in design and borrowing the same images as the T206 set, the T213-1 set was issued exclusively in the Louisiana region. At a glance, T213-1s look exactly like T206s, but when held in hand, it is immediately apparent that they are printed on extremely thin stock, in addition to not having gloss applied to the surface as do T206s. T213-1s also have a unique advertising design on their reverses. Approximately 70 different T213-1s are known. The Red Background portrait is the only pose of Cobb known to exist. It is interesting to note that the Ty Cobb Red Background pose is also the only pose that is known with an advertisement for Ty Cobb Tobacco on the reverse. We believe that the T213-1 of Ty Cobb is just as rare (or possibly even rarer) than the legendary T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb Tobacco back. The Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back card, of course, is one of card collecting's most famous and valuable tobacco cards, while the T213-1 Cobb is a little known and somewhat exotic rarity. The similarities of the T213-1 Coupon Cigarettes of Ty Cobb to its T206 counterpart, however, are great, and a reasonable case can also be made that the T213-1 Coupon set can lay far better claim to being a part of the T206 series than the legendary Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back card. The T213-1 Coupon series is the rarest of the three styles of T213 Coupon. It was issued at the same time as T206, and all cards in the set share the same designs and identical captions as T206. In a plastic page or a holder, T213-1 Coupons are indistinguishable from T206s. (There is also a T213-2 and a T213-3 series, each of which are separate and distinct Coupon Cigarettes issues with numerous significant differences to T206. Burdick could have just as easily given T213-2 and T213-3 their own catalog numbers without the same prefix, and catalogued T213-1s as being part of the T206 series.) The offered T213-1 Ty Cobb card is truly exceptional! It is bright and clean, with a deep red background, near-flawless registration, even wear at the corners (slightly more in the lower right), and outstanding centering (a little to the top). The reverse is clean and boldly printed in dark black text, with light, insignificant toning below the advertisement along with a tiny spot of surface scraping near the left border which has resulted in an unobtrusive spot of paper loss visible under close inspection. This is a breathtaking example of this fascinating rarity with exceptional eye-appeal. Over the years Robert Edward Auctions has handled the sale of at least eight of the approximately thirteen known examples of T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back cards. This is only the second example of the T213-1 Ty Cobb card that we can recall ever offering. This is a remarkable card that would be an extremely significant highlight in even the most advanced Ty Cobb, Hall of Fame, or prewar-card collection! Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $12,000
